The conflict in the Middle East was born several thousand years ago in a tent in the desert. The Old Testament, Book of Genesis, lays out the story in great detail. It’s compelling reading for students of the Middle East conflict.

I watched one day as a news reporter interviewed a Muslim student in the lecture hall of one of America’s most prestigious schools. The young man was adorned with a silk headpiece and appeared to come from a very wealthy Arab family I supposed. When asked whether Israel had a right to live in peace in the land that they now held as their homeland he became flustered and indignant. He said, “Who is Israel and what history do they have, who ever heard of Israel before now.”

When thinking about natural disasters, our minds usually turn to images of floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and the like that create a pretty good show while they are devastating the countryside and people. Reports about the damages caused by such disasters will sometimes give a fleeting mention of crop destruction, but you don’t hear much more about agricultural disasters until you get to the supermarket and see increased prices for some items.

During the old hot rodding days, oil was king. It was also only about 25 cents a gallon, and everyone thought there was an endless supply. Then we were hit with the oil shock of the seventies, and we realized that there was not an endless supply of oil (only of lines at the gas tanks) and we had to change our ways. Big, gas guzzling cars had to give way to economy models, and many of the traditional car companies suffered. But continued hish oil usage still threatens the supply.
